The Night
Themes
-Family: Family is very important to the Jews because they have nothing else when they get to the concentration camp. But later in the book family does not matter as much anymore, people are killing each other just to try and survive.
-Religion: Religion plays a big roll in the book. Elie for example has lost some faith in God because he does not understand why God is letting his people suffer like this.
-Lies/Deceit: Deception is everywhere in this book. There is a lot of self deception to, for example the Jews like to tell themselves that everything is okay and that nothing bad is going to happen to them. They also deceive others as well by telling them that their family or friends are okay, when they know they are not.
-Identity: The Jews are stripped of everything. They lose their clothes, hair, possessions and even their names.
-Mortality: An SS officer by the name of Dr. Mengele is in charge of who lives and who dies. He sends the weak, young and old straight to the crematoria and the rest are questioned of their age and what they do to determine whether they will work in the fields or the factory.
-Freedom/Confinement: The Germans at the beginning of the book confine the Jews to their homes then to the ghettos and eventually to the cattle cars for transportation to the concentration camps. From their many lose their possessions and most of them lose their lives.
-Violence: Violence is everywhere in this book. Most of the violence occurs in the concentration camps where prisoners were beaten and shot for no reason. Also the prisoners would kill each other to just to try and stay alive.
-Race: Jews were the number one target for the Nazi's mostly because of pure hate.
Motifs
-Hate: Hate sticks with the book the whole time because the Jews hate the Germans and the Germans hate the Jews.
-Hope: Hope is an important one because the prisoners are trying their best to stay positive about the situation. They are hoping for American soldiers to come and free them.
Symbols
-Night: The word ''night'' is used to symbolize death, darkness of the soul and loss of faith.
-Fire/Flames: This is used to symbolize death and destruction of the Jews when they arrive at Auschwitz.
-Corpses: This symbolizes spiritual death because the body is still there but the spirit has left the body.
Tones
-Mournful: The author mourns that the Jews didn't take warnings to what other people were saying about what the Germans were doing to people. He also mourns the loss of his family, his childhood and some of his faith in God's justice.
-Honest: The author is not shy about anything he tells things like they were. Wiesel tells us of how he watched his father get beaten by a German officer but he did not bother to help him. Wiesel is also very honest because he admits to going to bed while he left his father to die alone, and he admits to feeling that his father was a burden to him sometimes.
Moods
-Gloomy: This book is gloomy because nobody is happy, everyone is sad and depressed because of all the death and hatred surrounding them.
-Horrified: In the book the prisoners are horrified at what they see. They witness human beings get burned alive right in front of them. They also witnessed their friends and family being ripped away from them and never to be seen again.
Characterization:
-Eliezer: He is a very round character we know a lot about his family and where he came from and what he believes. We know that his father is a well respected Jewish leader in the community and we also know that his father forces him to study Hebrew. Elie is also a dynamic character. He's dynamic because he goes from this young school boy who is trying to figure out what he believes to a person who leaves his own dad to die alone so he has a better chance of survival.
Eliezer's Father: He is also a round character. We know a lot about his background and where he came from. He is also is a static character he does not change much throughout the book other than his physical appearance.
